Sakura Hayato is a fairly normal high-school student. Except for one thing: ghosts are attracted to him. On his 17th birthday, as his ghost problem reaches a peak, he encounters a sly-looking blond man in fancy black garb who introduces himself as "Undertaker Riddle." Riddle offers to help Hayato with his ghost problem on the condition that Hayato become his partner in the undertaking business, which is responsible for sending earthbound spirits to their destined place of final rest by way of a special funeral service. Though he initially refuses the suspicious proposition, circumstances soon come to pass where Hayato has to either accept a soul bond with Riddle… Or lose his life.

After losing their parents at an early age, Natsuhiko and Haru had to be seperated. Years later, Natsuhiko opened a café hoping to fulfill his and his parents' dreams. After an incident with a customer, Natsuhiko finds out that said customer is his younger brother. Unfortunately, he now works as a host. Not only that, Natsuhiko had racked up plenty of debt to finance his café. Can Natsuhiko overcome these obstacles and convince his younger brother to come back and keep his café, and their dreams, alive?

Kataribanashi-hen (語咄し編 Storytelling Chapter) is a compilation of winning fan stories for the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni series from the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Contest (ひぐらしのなく頃に大賞). Notably, the eight artists involved with the 10 main arcs of the manga all illustrated for at least one of the stories included in the novel volumes, while Karin Suzuragi and Jiro Suzuki even illustrated the cover arts for the manga volumes and Yutori Houjyou and Mimori each did the manga adaptation of a story. Among the other artists, Kei Natsumi, Soichiro, and Akai Higasa would later be involved with other works from 07th Expansion including Umineko no Naku Koro ni and Rose Guns Days. Some stories were adapted into a manga series named Kataribanashi-hen Comic Anthology EX (語咄し編 コミックアンソロジーEX Kataribanashi-hen Komikkuansorojī EX).
